Five C's of Credit Analysis

The lenders want to lend out their money; it's the way in which they make more money.  Although they only want to lend it to a borrower who can repay them in full and on time.

Small businesses seek commercial financing over certain limits, lender traditionally rely on the (5) C's of credit analysis--Capacity, Capital, Collateral, Conditions and Character--to determine if the borrower is a good risk.  Each "C" is considered; no one criteria alone will necessarily secure or prevent your access to credit.  There are no special formula or fixed rate lenders use to weight each of the (5) C's.  They are just factors that they use to access if the borrower maybe a good risk for their lending institution.

  • Capacity-An assessment of your ability to repay funds.

  • Capital- Is your investment in your company-what you have at stake in event of company failure.

  • Collateral-A solid asset that the lender can sell if you fail to repay the loan items such as:heavy          
            machinery, stocks, bonds, property etc.

  • Condition-A comprehensive assessment of the circumstances surrounding the loan-general economic
                conditions at the time of the loan request and the purpose of the loan.

  • Character-This is all about your personal background and your ability to impress the lender as a
                dependable person.
